Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Tanzania. Yet Northern Tanzania — home to 15 million people — has no specialist cardiac centre of its own.

This is the journey a patient in Northern Tanzania must face to reach the nearest specialist cardiac centre. An exhausting, often unaffordable trip — or no care at all.

Trekkers scale Kilimanjaro every year
Wapanda mlima huja Kilimanjaro kila mwaka

Kilimanjaro draws visitors from every corner of the world. But altitude — rising rapidly to 5,895m — places immense cardiovascular stress on the body, and undiagnosed conditions can surface without warning. A world-class cardiac centre at the foot of the mountain would give every trekker the reassurance that emergency cardiovascular care is close at hand.

"My son was born with a hole in his heart. We were told to go to Dar es Salaam — 600 kilometres away. We could not afford the journey. For two years we watched him struggle, not knowing if he would survive. A centre like this, here in Moshi, would have changed everything for our family."

Who We Are Sisi ni Nani

A Pillar of East African
Healthcare Since 1971

Nguzo ya Afya Afrika Mashariki
Tokea Mwaka 1971

The Cardiovascular Centre is the next chapter in a story that began over six decades ago — a story of faith, community, and the relentless pursuit of better care for Northern Tanzania.

In the early 1960s, the government of newly independent Tanganyika called on the Christian churches to establish a referral and teaching hospital for the Northern Zone. The Lutheran, Anglican, and Moravian churches responded by founding the Good Samaritan Foundation — raising funds locally and from international partners including Lutherhjälpen of Sweden and Bread for the World in Germany.

On 8 June 1965, Tanzania's founding president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere laid the first cornerstone — an act that bound the nation's ambition to the hospital's purpose. Construction was completed and KCMC opened in March 1971.

Today, KCMC is one of just seven zonal consultant hospitals in all of Tanzania — and the undisputed centre of specialist care for 15 million people across six regions. Its 480-acre campus in Moshi encompasses a 721-bed hospital, a world-class clinical research institute, and a medical university college that trains the next generation of East African health professionals.

The Cardiovascular Centre is not a departure from this mission. It is its continuation — the latest frontier in a half-century of expanding what is possible for patients in Northern Tanzania.
