Pathology department is located on the underground floor, below Urology department. The department provides diagnostic services to KCMC and other hospitals within and outside the region. Pathology department has four working units namely:
Cancer Registry Unit.
Some of the activities done at the department include:
Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC)
Cervical PAP smear analysis
Seminal fluid analysis
Postmortem examination services, both medico-legal and clinical
Embalming as well as body storage services etc.
Collection, recording and maintaining cancer data of patients within KCMC hospital and the peripheral hospitals identified bt the registry.
Teaching: The department is engaged with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College(KCMUCo),teaching activities particularly Medical doctor
students, Laboratory science, Masters of medicine, AMO's and other allied health students. .
Very soon the facility will establish Immunohistochemisty diagnostic tests to increase the diagnostic capacity especially for tumors and also frozen section procedures that will allow intra-operative diagnosis.
Pathology department has a strong collaboration with Nijmegen University of The Netherlands, whereby senior pathologists have been regularly visiting KCMCs teaching at the University College.
